String Calculation Operations
Perform string computations — concatenate, prefix, suffix, pad, split, extract, replace, and more.
String Calculate functions perform computation and manipulation operations on text columns, producing new or modified values in each row. They are available via the column context menu under Calculate > in the Table view.
To access these functions:
Open a Dataset in Table view.
Click the menu icon (≡) on any text column header.
Hover over Calculate > to expand the submenu.
Select the desired function.

Suffix
Appends a suffix to the value in each row of the selected column. The suffix can be a value from another column or a fixed constant string.

Separator options: None, Space, -, ~, _
Example:
invoice
2025
_
invoice_2025
Prefix
Prepends a prefix to the value in each row of the selected column. The prefix can be a value from another column or a fixed constant string.

Separator options: None, Space, -, ~, _
Example:
report
Q1
-
Q1-report
Padding
Pads each value in the selected column with a specified character on the left or right side until the string reaches the specified total length.

💡 Note: Only the first character of the padding value is used, even if multiple characters are provided.
Example:
42
Left
0
5
00042
Concat
Concatenates the value in the selected column with a value from another column or a constant into a single string.

Separator options: None, Space, -, ~, _
Example:
John
Doe
Space
John Doe
Length
Returns the character length of the value in each row of the selected column as a numeric output.
Example:
dataworkz
9

Extract Domain from URL
Extracts the domain portion from a URL string in each row.
Example:
https://www.dataworkz.com/docs/overview
dataworkz.com
Clean URL From Raw
Cleans and normalizes a raw URL string, removing extraneous characters, encoding artifacts, or formatting inconsistencies to produce a clean, usable URL.
Split Value
Splits the value in each row into two parts using a specified delimiter.

Split By
The delimiter character or string to split on.
Select value from
Whether to return the value from the Left or Right of the split.
Choose value
Whether to use the First or Last occurrence of the delimiter.
Include pattern in result
When checked, retains the delimiter in the output.
Example:
first.last@email.com
@
First
first.last
email.com
Pattern Matcher
Evaluates each row in the selected column against a provided pattern and returns a boolean result (true or false) indicating whether the value matches.

Pattern to match
The regex pattern or string to test each value against.
Create New Column
When enabled, writes the boolean result to a new column.
Column Name
The name of the new column.
Example:
user@example.com
Email regex
true
not-an-email
Email regex
false
SubString
Extracts a portion of the string in each row based on specified start and end index positions.

Start From (included)
The character index at which extraction begins (0-based, inclusive).
End At Index (excluded)
The character index at which extraction ends (exclusive).
Example:
dataworkz
0
4
data
Replace All Occurrence
Replaces every occurrence of a specified string or regex pattern within each row's value with a provided replacement string.

Replace text/regex
The string or regex pattern to find.
With
The replacement string.
Create New Column
When enabled, writes the result to a new column.
Example:
foo bar foo
foo
baz
baz bar baz
Split and Unnest
Splits the value in each row using a specified delimiter and unnests the resulting parts into separate rows, expanding the Dataset vertically.

Split using Pattern
The delimiter pattern to split on.
Create New Column
When enabled, writes the unnested values to a new column.
Column Name
The name of the new column.
Example:
a,b,c
,
a / b / c (3 rows)
💡 Note: Unlike Split Value, which produces two columns in the same row, Split and Unnest creates one new row per split segment.
